Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has harshly critiqued Red Bull’s Sergio Perez. The 34-year-old has been in poor form for the Milton-Keynes-based team, scoring merely 24 points in the last seven races.

Sergio Perez signed a contract extension with Red Bull earlier this season, which led to questions in the minds of many. The outfit had several capable drivers as their potential options but chose to stick with the shaky Mexican.

Guenther Steiner has since claimed that the team’s decision to keep Perez after the race at Spa came as a surprise to him. The six-time Grand Prix winner disappointingly finished P7 despite starting the race from second place at the Belgian GP.

I was very surprised by the decision. After Spa, I thought there would be a change, but it didn't happen. Obviously there's a reason for that, but it could also be that they have a plan that they haven't shared with us. I didn't expect Checo to stay. His timing was very good in Spa, but in the race he was mediocre.
Guenther Steiner told GPBlog

Perez now stands in a jeopardizing position within the team, desperately needing to notch wins and podiums. He will try to do exactly that in the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, where Formula 1 resumes after a month-long summer break.
