Lewis Hamilton is having his worst time in Formula 1 this season. The seven-time world champion’s dream move to Scuderia Ferrari turned into a disaster. So much so, the British driver seems to be openly making demoralizing comments on himself and his team. Now, former Haas team boss Guenther Steiner has criticized Hamilton’s latest remarks.

During the Hungarian GP weekend, Lewis Hamilton was devastated after Qualifying. The Ferrari star went as far as calling himself ‘absolutely useless’ for the team. Rather, Hamilton insisted that the Scuderia might be better off replacing him entirely. Some figures in the paddock such as former F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone believe that such comments show that it’s time for Hamilton to retire from the sport. However, Steiner has a different opinion.

Guenther Steiner was shocked to hear Lewis Hamilton call himself useless. The Italian-American made it clear that a seven-time world champion simply cannot say something like that even if his performances were not up to the mark. Steiner asserted that everyone does struggle in their lives and Hamilton was just in that phase at the moment.

How can you come out as being seven-time world champion saying, I’m useless? That was, it’s not his performance. I do not care about that. I’m not going into his performance. He’s struggling. At some stage in our life, we all struggle a little bit.

Guenther Steiner said on the Red Flags podcast

Moreover, the former Haas boss declared that calling yourself useless during a time of struggle was simply the wrong attitude. Steiner claimed that Lewis Hamilton made it seem that he was giving up and he wanted people to feel bad for his situation. Such an approach was simply unexpected from an all-time great like Hamilton.

I still struggle, so I always struggle, but coming out and saying, oh, I’m useless. That’s the wrong attitude. And that is for me. I don’t like attitude of giving up, you know, or it’s an attitude that people should feel sorry for you.

Lewis Hamilton has been open regarding his approach to Ferrari. The seven-time world champion has publicly stated that he knows there are things that need to change within Maranello. Guenther Steiner recalled that Hamilton had previously stated that he was going to work with engineers to fix all issues within the team. Now, just within a couple of weeks, the Briton found himself useless. Steiner suggested that Hamilton should just stick to what he knows best, and that’s racing.

A few weeks ago, [Hamilton was] sitting down the engineers telling them what to do and now you’re coming back and saying, I’m useless. It’s just focus on what you’re good at, which is driving a race car, because he’s good. He’s a seven-time world champion.

Guenther Steiner added

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton is in a tough spot. The seven-time world champion’s plans of helping bring glory back to Maranello are falling apart. This has taken a toll on Hamilton’s mental health and his comments don’t hide his frustration. Though, the summer break could help the F1 star’s morale as he spends some time with his close ones.
