Red Bull dominated Formula 1 at the start of the ground-effect era in 2022. Max Verstappen annihilated the competition the following year. Though, last season was tougher for Milton Keynes. Now, Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has hinted at a potential reason for the recent struggles.

Aero genius Adrian Newey played a pivotal role in shaping Milton Keynes as a fierce contender in Formula 1. The 66-year-old announced his departure from Red Bull in May 2024 to join Aston Martin this year. This was seen as a massive loss for the Austrian team ahead of the 2026 rule changes.

Helmut Marko highlighted that Red Bull had a strong start in 2024 with Max Verstappen winning seven out of the first ten races. However, since Newey left Milton Keynes, Marko confessed that the team is finding it difficult to extract everything out of the car. This goes against Christian Horner‘s comments over the Austrian squad being unfazed by his exit.

We had started well, dominating, but since Newey left in fact our technicians have had a little trouble getting the most out of the machine.

Helmut Marko remains optimistic for Red Bull in 2025

The 81-year-old pointed out that at the end of the season, things started to come back on track for Red Bull. Max Verstappen managed to win his fourth title in a row. Thus, Marko reckoned that the team was still optimistic for the start of the upcoming season despite a challenging battle up front.

At the end of the season things have progressively gone in the right direction and we can say that we are very optimistic for the future.

Helmut Marko stated

Certainly, Adrian Newey’s absence will have an impact on Red Bull. It is far too difficult to fill the void left by someone like Newey. Nevertheless, the Austrian team has a massive pool of talent who have already filled the big shoes of the aero-genius at Milton Keynes. It remains to be seen if Marko’s squad can continue their success this year.
