The long season of 2023 has finally come to an end with what will perhaps be remembered as one of the greatest stories of dominance by a single constructor in F1 history. Red Bull drivers won 21 out of the 22 races held this year, thus asserting their success over the rivals thanks to the ‘rocketship’ RB-19. However, the next season is set to have the longest calendar that fans of the pinnacle of motorsports have ever seen with 24 races in different locations around the world. Needless to say, the calendar will have a few triple headers to accomodate all the 24 races in the season.
Many new fans who have newly turned to the craze for Formula One often confuse the true meaning of a Triple Header. While some might think that ‘triple header’ means the Free Practice, Qualifying, and the Main Race which are held during a race weekend, the actual meaning is quite different. In Formula 1, a triple header is a combination of three races in three consecutive race weekends without a week’s break between the subsequent races. Usually there are a few sprint weekends during a triple header in Formula 1.
In 2023, there were only two triple headers in the entire calendar. This season’s calendar has revealed that there will be three triple headers in Formula 1. Despite the backlash over the triple header format, F1 has decided to lock the season with one more triple header compared to this season.
The first from the triple header is from rounds 10-12 including the Spain, Austria and Britain as the first part of the three triple headers. The penultimate triple header is from rounds 19-21 in the USA, Mexico and Brazil. And finally, the third triple header is towards the end of the season. The ultimate triple header is from rounds 22-24 including Las Vegas, Qatar and the ultimate race of the season at Abu Dhabi.
Other facts about the calendar of 2024 for Formula 1
Apart from the astonishing three triple headers in the calendar, some other facts about the calendar are also worth noting. The calendar did not include the Chinese GP for the past three years, but it will make a return in 2024. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in the country led to the cancellation of the venue from the calendar at that time.
Apart from this, the Suzuka GP or the Japanese GP has also been shifted to an earlier slot in the calendar. Shifting the Suzuka GP or Japanese GP to an earlier slot in the calendar aimed to reduce carbon footprints by teams traveling between venues. This change, from round 17 to the fourth spot, responds to demands from protestors for a more eco-friendly calendar.
A whopping 24 races are making their debut in the F1 calendar for the first time. Consequently, the drivers on the grid might face extreme fatigue towards the end of the 2024 season, seriously testing their mettle. Despite majority of the people on the grid showcasing concerns over the high amounts of races, F1 continues to soar though the season.
