Lewis Hamilton‘s unexpected switch to Ferrari for the 2025 season surprised everyone on the grid. The Briton deemed a late-career switch following a few underwhelming season performances at Mercedes. Sir Jackie Stewart recalled that he was ‘surprised’ to find out about the Briton’s move.

Sir. Jackie Stewart was a highly sought driver back then much like Lewis Hamilton. Hence, speaking on Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, Steward recalled that he had a similar opportunity too. However, the three-time champion felt he was too old back then and decided to finally retire in 1973. Due to this, the 85-year-old recalled that he was ‘surprised’ when he initially found out about the news.

So for Lewis, I was surprised he was going there, but I nearly went to Ferrari and chose not to do it in the end, but in that time the old man was a tough cookie.

Sir Jackie Stewart told Sky Sports.

Stewart seemed in full support of Hamilton following the latter’s move to Ferrari in 2025. The Briton highlighted that joining the Italian constructor was very ‘colorful’ and exciting, which would grant the 40-year-old great success. As such, the legend refused to rule out the seven-time champion’s chances with Maranello in the coming season.

Going to Ferrari is very colourful, very exciting and usually very successful, so I wouldn’t count him out, put it that way.

Jackie Stewart claims Lewis Hamilton ‘knows the business well’ amidst Ferrari move

Lewis Hamilton has raced in Formula 1 for quite a while now and knows a lot about the sport. This meant that Hamilton considered all his options before deeming a move to the Italian constructor. Jackie Stewart resonated with this thought and claimed that the 40-year-old was growing in terms of experience and knew the ‘business’ well. Moreover, the 85-year-old asserted that Ferrari was the biggest name in the world.

He’s more experienced than he was last year, and he knows the business very well. Ferrari is the biggest name in the world, and if you went to a Maasai warrior in Africa and said: ‘do you know anything about Ferrari?’, they would know the name Ferrari.

Jackie Stewart noted

Hamilton is expected to take Ferrari back to their championship-winning days after a drought of over 16 years. The Briton will form a formidable pair with Charles Leclerc and maximize points for the Italian constructor. The coming season would be interesting as the Prancing Horse aims to contend for both championships.
