Max Verstappen and Lando Norris went head-to-head for victory at the Qatar GP. Though, the latter was forced down the pecking order after a late penalty. Now, former F1 driver Jan Lammers has highlighted why Verstappen complained over Norris’ actions which gave him the punishment.

The Dutch driver was leading the race with Lando Norris not far behind. The main straight was under yellow flags due to a rear view mirror on-track. Max Verstappen slowed down to abide by the yellow flags. However, he noticed Norris did not do the same. Subsequently, the four-time world champion told the Red Bull pit wall to report the incident to the stewards.

Lammers insisted that Max Verstappen simply wants ruling to be consistent in Formula 1. The 27-year-old was following the regulations during that incident, while Norris was not. If the McLaren driver was not penalized, he could’ve defeated Verstappen for the win after making gains on the straight.

Max wants to [the ruling] be consistent. He is doing something according to the regulations, and Lando is not. If by that action Lando had won the race by one second.

Max Verstappen raced ‘hard’ to win Qatar GP

Despite Norris’ 10-second stop and go penalty, Jan Lammers emphasized that it was not an easy victory for Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion had to drive hard throughout the race to maintain his lead against the competition. Verstappen could only hold on to the win after managing to fend off Lando Norris for a majority of the Grand Prix.

Max had no reason yet to think: ‘I [have] won this race.’ He still had to drive hard for it.

Certainly, Max Verstappen was happy to leave Qatar with his ninth victory of the year. The Dutch driver will now shift focus to the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Red Bull would be hoping for a solid result this weekend to grab second place in the standings from Scuderia Ferrari.
