Max Verstappen has dominated Formula 1 in recent years. The Red Bull star even defended the world title last year despite arguably not having the fastest car. However, former F1 driver and FIA steward Johnny Herbert reckons that the Verstappen now faces rebellion from his rivals.
Herbert pointed out that the Dutch driver was playing a game of intimidation last season. Max Verstappen had multiple on-track incidents with title contender Lando Norris. Moreover, the FIA steward pointed out the mind games played by Verstappen by making comments on his rivals over the course of the year.
On the other hand, the rest of the grid stood up to the Red Bull star. Johnny Herbert pointed out that drivers began to rebel and respond to Verstappen. He cited the example of Mercedes’ George Russell who was extremely vocal during a war of words with the reigning world champion.
Necessary for drivers to respond to Max Verstappen
Johnny Herbert reckoned that it was crucial for drivers to oppose Max Verstappen in case of any comments made by the 27-year-old. Although, the 60-year-old emphasized that it was more about mutual respect, to see a driver call out another for saying something which was not correct. In this case, it was George Russell.
Certainly, fans can expect to see more controversies in the upcoming season. Max Verstappen will likely not change himself heading into the season. As such, if the Dutchman gets involved in any on-track tussles, sparks could fly all over the paddock once again.
