FIA Steward urges Lando Norris to ‘use elbows’ after 2024 title defeat

The battle for the 2024 Drivers’ championship came down to between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. However, this battle was short-lived as the reigning champion had a secure grip over the title and won the championship with two rounds to spare. This led FIA steward Johnny Herbert to urge the Briton to get his elbows out after having multiple flashpoints with the Dutchman in 2024.
Lando Norris was given priority at McLaren when the upgrades arrived in Miami, at the sixth round of the season. This helped the Woking-based outfit to leapfrog Red Bull in terms of raw performance and gave Norris the prime seat of having a go at his first world championship. On the other hand, Max Verstappen had to defend a lead of 78 points heading into the summer break.
While this lead shrank into the 40s, flashpoints between Norris and Verstappen often saw the Dutchman having the upper hand. This led to the Briton conceding points regularly to the Red Bull driver.
Subsequently, after losing the title to Verstappen, Johnny Herbert criticized the 25-year-old for racing with a defensive mindset. He urged Norris to use his elbows and go all out while racing.

Norris would have learned his lesson on how to fight for the world championship after suffering a major defeat to the Dutchman. With McLaren poised to be the favorite for the title next year, the Briton is expected to have his best chance to win his maiden drivers’ title.

While Norris would be wanting an easy time to win his first world title, Oscar Piastri would be forming his own plans over the winter break. This has been witnessed over the 2024 season as the Aussie does not like to go out without giving a fight.
With the memories of Hungary and Italy still fresh in fans’ minds, Norris would not have an easy time. Moreover, Herbert further asserted that the papaya pair would become the next big head-to-head in F1.
The competition will push the pair of them. I like Oscar’s strong mindset. The next big head-to-head next season is going to be between Oscar and Lando! McLaren will dominate ahead of Red Bull, then Ferrari and Mercedes.

On the other hand, Red Bull have been repping itself up for the challenge that would be posed by McLaren. They recently made a change in their driver line-up, which is expected to make the lives of other teams quite difficult. Thus, the next season is expected to be a banger after the heights achieved in 2024.
