Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominated Formula 1 with the start of the ground-effect era in 2022. Last season was a challenge for the Dutch driver, yet he managed to defend the world title. Now, FIA steward and former F1 driver Johnny Herbert has drawn an interesting comparison between Verstappen and Michael Schumacher.

Herbert recalled that throughout his time in the F1 paddock, Michael Schumacher was the one dominant force on the grid, something that he ensured even before the first round of a season. Johnny Herbert insisted that this was exactly what Max Verstappen had also done in recent years.

Well, from all my experiences, one of those being with Michael Schumacher, Michael Schumacher made sure that he was the dominant force. That was even before you got to the very first race.

Johnny Herbert told Casinoutanspelpaus.io.

The 60-year-old reckoned that Verstappen manages to control his destiny irrespective of who he is paired up with at Red Bull. Herbert highlighted that the four-time world champion was in complete control of only his destiny, with the team seeming to be secondary.

That’s also what Max Verstappen does, he makes sure that whoever his team-mate is, he’s in control of his destiny, just his destiny. Is it Red Bull’s destiny? A little bit, but it’s mainly Verstappen’s.

Johnny Herbert added

McLaren needs to follow Max Verstappen path in 2025

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri form one of the strongest pairings on the 2025 grid. The two drivers could create a tricky situation for McLaren. Johnny Herbert asserted that the two need to be in a similar position like Verstappen at Red Bull. He suggested that the Woking-based team should simply let the situation blossom in itself.

That’s what Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have got to do at McLaren. How do McLaren deal with that? Well, they’ve got to let it blossom itself.

Johnny Herbert stated

Certainly, McLaren will allow both its drivers to race freely at the start of the year, before implementing team orders. The British team will back the driver who has the best chance of putting an end to Max Verstappen’s title streak. Though, it remains to be seen if the reigning world champion manages to defend his championship once again.
