Lando Norris demonstrated his dominance after the summer break with a standout performance at Zandvoort, proving he’s a top contender. McLaren has also announced that they will support Norris over Oscar Piastri in the championship battle against Max Verstappen. However, The Briton has stated that he doesn’t want to be handed the title, but wants to earn it through his own efforts, so he can take pride in his achievement.

Lando Norris acknowledged that losing the F1 title after being so dominant will be painful, but he emphasized that he’s focused on racing. He believed that if another driver performs better and outshines him, that driver deserves the recognition and success. Norris felt it’s important to respect and accept the outcome, rather than trying to take away from someone who has genuinely done a better job.

I'm sure it will hurt. But I’m also here to race, and if a driver is doing better than me, and outperforming, he’s just doing a better job.

McLaren had already announced that they would back the Briton over Oscar Piastri in championship battle. The Briton earlier also mentioned he would not beg Piastri to let him pass. However, Norris felt that winning a championship would feel amazing in short term, he doesn’t want it handed to him. The 24-year-old believed that if the title were just given without fully earning it, he wouldn’t feel truly proud in the long run. For him, the real satisfaction would come from knowing that he worked hard and deserved the victory.

And I also don’t want to be given a championship. Yes, it would be great to have a championship, and short-term, you’d feel amazing. But I don’t think you’d be proud of that in the long run.

That’s not how I want to win a championship. I want to win it by fighting against Max, by beating Max, beating my competitors, and proving that I’m the best on track. And that’s how I want to win.
Lando Norris stated.

Certainly, Norris wants to earn the championship by overcoming the toughest competition, rather than handed the title without the challenge. This way, the victory would feel more meaningful and satisfying and he would be proud of himself in the long-run.
