Lando Norris and McLaren have made rapid progress in the past year. The Woking-based team has turned out to be the strongest challenger to Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s dominance in F1. However, it seems that there still is a long way to go before the British driver can become a real threat to the reigning world champion.

Norris managed to defeat Max Verstappen and take his maiden F1 victory in Miami this season. Many reckoned that Lando Norris had a real shot at the title. In the following races, the Briton did have the pace to challenge the Dutch driver.

However, this is the first time when Lando Norris is in a title fight, and it shows. The McLaren driver lost out on a potential sprint victory in Austria for making a mistake on-track. While Norris could not hold back his emotions after colliding with Verstappen in the race. As such, Norris and McLaren might be unprepared to truly fight for F1 title.

Lando Norris and McLaren need to learn how to stay calm

After the clash at the Austrian GP, Norris and McLaren indulged in a war of words against Red Bull. So much so, that the team admitted it had taken the incident to the FIA at the end of the weekend. On the other hand, Max Verstappen’s camp seemed almost unbothered by the comments made by the Woking-based team.

Ultimately, these statements did not help McLaren and Lando Norris even backtracked on wanting an apology from Max Verstappen. Moreover, this could further hamper the team as it reportedly tries to get a Red Bull power unit supply in 2026. Milton Keynes might not be willing to give its own engines to a rival which has publicly hit out at it in recent weeks.

Additionally, Norris has failed to win a single race after Miami. A poor strategy at Silverstone denied the Briton of a potential victory yet again. This shows that McLaren is still making mistakes at a time where its rivals are right on top of the game.

Certainly, Lando Norris and his team must wake up and understand that in a title fight, one must remain cool-headed and avoid errors at all costs. Despite having the fastest car on average in recent rounds, Norris has not won a race. As such, it seems that the British driver might find it difficult to win the title this season.
