Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have emerged as the two contenders for the 2025 F1 world championship. The McLaren drivers have successfully managed to outperform reigning world champion Max Verstappen and gain a healthy lead. This could create an alarming intra-team rivalry at Woking. However, Norris seems to be unwilling to push things too far.
The British driver had the upper hand on Oscar Piastri for the past two seasons at McLaren. Lando Norris‘ experience helped him against a rookie Piastri. Though, this season has been far different. The Australian driver has seemingly felt at home with the car, and exceeded expectations. This put the pressure on Lando Norris.
It is Oscar Piastri who leads the championship right now. Norris was asked whether he will try to get under the skin of his teammate to put pressure on his shoulders. The 25-year-old gave a rather morbid response, stating that such things won’t matter in 200 years when all of us will be dead. Lando Norris explained that he was just trying to enjoy his time in F1. Though, the Briton asserted that he does care about the title race, after all, he is always going hard on himself whenever things go wrong.
I don’t enjoy that. In 200 years, no one is going to care. We’ll all be dead. I am trying to have a good time. I still care about it, and that’s why I get upset sometimes, and I get disappointed and I get angry at myself.
Lando Norris said, as quoted by RacingNews365
While it is understandable that Norris would not want to play mind games with his teammate, his comment feels odd. It is unclear why the Briton would bring death to such a conversation.
Lando Norris wants to defeat Oscar Piastri ‘more than anyone else’
Formula 1 has one major rule, your teammate is your first rival. Since only two teammates can truly be compared on pure pace as they drive the same cars. This is indeed true, particularly at McLaren this season as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are the two drivers fighting for the world title.

Thus, it is no surprise that Norris does want to defeat Piastri at all costs. The 25-year-old stated that there’s no one other than the Australian driver that he would want to outperform. However, the Briton recognized that if Oscar Piastri manages to beat him on-track, the 24-year-old would’ve simply done a better job.
Yes, he [Piastri] is the guy I want to beat more than anyone else. But if I don’t beat him, then that’s just because he has done a better job.
Lando Norris stated
Lando Norris made it clear that he does not care about intra-team games during title battles. Norris hinted at the Mercedes rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, claiming that he didn’t care if such a thing happened in the past.
I will do it the way I believe is best for me, and just because one person did it a few years ago, it doesn’t mean you have to do that, too. I don’t really care about those things.
Lando Norris added
Certainly, Lando Norris is taking a mature approach to the title battle against Oscar Piastri. The 25-year-old understands that he needs to simply perform at his best to win the championship without resorting to any mind games. While Piastri continues to have the edge right now, there’s still half of the season left for Norris to catch-up.
