Lewis Hamilton will join Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025 to make one of the strongest pairings in Formula 1. The Scuderia is bringing in the seven-time world champion in a bid to end its long win-drought at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Hamilton at the age of 39 remains hungry as ever to win his eighth world title. The British driver decided to leave Mercedes and show faith in Ferrari. On the other hand, Charles Leclerc has been a mainstay of Maranello since being promoted to the squad in 2019.
There are no doubts that both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will be ready to push themselves to the limit at Ferrari next season. However, the chances to win the first title for the Scuderia in 2008 depend on a lot more than just the car.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc need to be comfortable as teammates
In Formula 1, your teammate is your biggest rival. As racing in the same car is the only fair comparison between Leclerc and Hamilton. Thus, despite the friendly relations between them, the two will be looking to defeat each other from the first round onward of the 2025 season.
Charles Leclerc has been part of Maranello for six seasons. The Monegasque driver has built the team around him over the years. As such, Leclerc could feel that Lewis Hamilton’s arrival might be a threat to his position as team leader.
While Hamilton would want to have the team work around him and listen to his feedback for the car. This could bring tensions between the two sides of the garage. Although, this could even motivate the two drivers to push themselves further.
Ferrari is currently a long way behind McLaren and Red Bull. Maranello will be looking to find more pace over the winter and become a real contender for the 2025 title. Hamilton’s involvement might be the final boost the team needs to have a quick car from the get-go. While Leclerc’s feedback over the 2024 car would present lessons that the team might need to avoid.
Certainly, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could bring the best out of each other and the Scuderia next year. However, Maranello must first develop a capable car over the winter break to provide its drivers with the opportunity to fight for race victories.
