The Italian GP is one of the most exciting races on the F1 calendar. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seemed set for a dominant weekend with the MCL38 being the quickest car. However, the two drivers were outperformed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Now, Lewis Hamilton has revealed what went wrong for the Woking-based squad in the race.

The seven-time world champion highlighted that the two McLarens were pushing too hard throughout the Grand Prix. Moreover, Lewis Hamilton claimed that he was hearing the lap times of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the race. Hamilton asserted that the Woking-based team was too focused on a two-stop strategy.

If you look at the race trace, they were pushing too hard (McLaren). I was hearing the lap times, and that was focused on a two stop race.

Lewis Hamilton insisted that if the team had backed down a bit, they would’ve made it on a one-stop. This would’ve put Oscar Piastri in best position to win the race as he would not have conceded track position to Leclerc.

Lewis Hamilton reveals ‘only positive’ for Mercedes from Monza

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes had a disastrous weekend at the Italian GP. The 39-year-old finished fifth after an uneventful race. Hamilton admitted that the only positive for the Silver Arrows was reliability of the W15. However, the seven-time world champion noted that all four top teams seem to have no issues regarding reliability of their respective cars.

I think the only positive is that we had good reliability, but everyone around us had good reliability. I didn't have the pace, and I don't know why.
Lewis Hamilton explained

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton was not content leaving Monza. The Silver Arrows seem to simply lack pace following the summer break with even Ferrari now seemingly up front. However, it remains to be seen if Hamilton and his team can bounce back in the next race.
