Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton could only manage to finish as high as P6 at the Qatar Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. His teammate George Russell, on the other hand, starts P2 on Sunday at the Lusail International Circuit.
Lewis Hamilton has been massively outpaced by George Russell in qualifying this season. Things have flown in favor of the 39-year-old on some occasions but have mostly been against him. While some claim this to be a failure on the Silver Arrows’ behalf, others blame Hamilton for his poor runs.
Hamilton was once again baffled by Russell’s pace during the Qatar GP qualifying. He was clueless upon being asked about his woes after the session. The Brit nonetheless claimed that he put forward his best efforts for the team.
Lewis Hamilton: (Nods head (one more quali weekend to go). I can't explain why I am half a second off my teammate. The car felt generally fine for me. There isn't more I can add on that. I just cross the line and its slow.

With only two races to go, the seven-time world champion cannot wait for his performance miseries to end. He joins the Maranello-based Ferrari in 2025 and will be hoping to start fresh in search of an eighth title with the team.
George Russell shares inputs after clocking P2 in Qatar GP qualifying
George Russell has been on a flyer for the past few races. He started in pole position at the previous race, which he won as well. The 26-year-old has since talked of his Q3 lap after a closely contested qualifying in Qatar.
George Russell: It's been a great run, the last four qualifying's we've been on the front row every one, which is more than we could have dreamt of. My first lap was one of the best I've ever done, then on the last lap Max just pipped me

Russell has praised his team for the pivotal turnaround in performances as compared to the start of the season. He claims that he could have done better on the final lap if he was not blocked by Max Verstappen.
No decision has yet been delivered against Max Verstappen for impeding the Brit during the final stages of Q3. What this tees up now is a fierce battle between the two rivals for the win in the much-awaited 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.
