Liam Lawson is finally getting the opportunity he long desired after being named Red Bull’s reserve driver in 2022. Following Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 exit due to poor performances in the 2024 season, Lawson is set to replace him at VCARB for the remaining races this season. This marks a pivotal moment in the 21-year-old’s career as he prepares for his first race of 2024 in Austin.
Liam Lawson acknowledged that competing in Formula 1 felt like a fight for survival between him and Daniel Ricciardo, even though neither perceived it that way. He clarified that he never felt he was battling the 35-year-old for a seat. Their relationship remained strong and positive.
Ricciardo faced a string of misfortunes this season, which influenced Red Bull’s decision to give Lawson an opportunity. This change came after the New Zealander’s good performance at last year’s Dutch GP. Now, Lawson faces a challenge to perform well at the US GP to assure VCARB that he is the right pick.
Lawson mentioned that the competition for the seat wasn’t just between him and Ricciardo, as Red Bull could have chosen any driver. He also thanked Ricciardo for his guidance and support in 2023.
Liam Lawson claims 2024 season was challenging due to uncertainty regarding his Red Bull future
After being named as Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement, Liam Lawson spoke about how he felt after getting a spot on the F1 grid. He explained that the 2023 season was a positive experience for him after making his F1 debut with AlphaTauri. Lawson also admitted that this season has been challenging for him.
Liam Lawson will now focus on delivering strong performances to secure a competitive drive next season. The 21-year-old will aim to outperform teammate Yuki Tsunoda and establish himself as a stronger contender for a full-time seat.
