The 2024 Mexican Grand Prix was packed with drama and excitement, but it was far from good for Sergio Perez. The 34-year-old couldn’t find his pace and got overtaken by Liam Lawson in an RB which was an unexpected twist.
To make things worse, the 22-year-old added insult to injury by flashing a middle finger at Checo while passing him. This turned their battle for position into something far more personal.
The Kiwi driver is in the running to join Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025. After the Singapore GP, he switched to Daniel Ricciardo‘s seat. However, before making his choice, Helmut Marko set conditions for Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda.
He made it clear that only one of them would get the chance to drive for the main team. It all comes down to who would outperform the other in the final six races.

Both Liam Lawson and Sergio Perez are fighting hard for points, and the 22-year-old has been performing well. In Mexico, Lawson overtook Perez, who many believe is on the verge of replacement.
However, the Kiwi driver showed clear disrespect during the overtake, flashing a middle finger at the Mexican. Their aggressive battle for positions led to multiple incidents on track. The tension between them only escalated, with Lawson’s gesture adding more salt to the wound.
Sergio Perez unhappy with Liam Lawson’s gesture thinking it wasn’t clever move
Sergio Perez expressed his frustration with Liam Lawson after a collision during the Mexican GP, stating that the incident ruined both their races. He criticized Lawson’s aggressive move, which caused significant damage to Checo’s car, and questioned the decision-making behind it.

The 34-year-old slammed the New Zealander’s attitude, displaying a lack of humility, which he believed could harm Lawson’s future in F1. Checo believed the 22-year-old should be more humble and modest as he’s just starting.
I think the way he came into Formula 1, he doesn’t have the right attitude for it. He needs to be a bit more modest.
Sergio Perez said, as reported by Formula 1
The race in Mexico also hindered Red Bull’s hope of snatching their constructors’ lead from McLaren. Ferrari, who was sitting in third place, secured 1-3 in Mexico and got ahead of Milton Keynes in the standings.
With four races and two sprints left, the Austrian team still has plenty of chances to score points and stay in the championship fight. There’s hope for strong results, especially with Max Verstappen leading by 47 points and keeping his title hopes alive.
