Lewis Hamilton‘s signing with Ferrari is among one of the many sensational stories in Formula 1 this year. The Briton will join the Italian constructor in hopes of taking them back to their former glory days. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur pulled off a masterstroke with the signing of the seven-time world champion. However, the Ex-Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto feels otherwise as he pointed out that he wouldn’t have signed Hamilton.

Mattia Binotto was the team principal of Ferrari between 2019-2022. The Swiss-Italian was unable to amass any notable feats in terms of championship victories and was ultimately ousted. Regardless, speaking on Fred Vasseur‘s leadership and decisions, Binotto shared his opinion. The 54-year-old claimed that he wouldn’t have taken Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari despite the move being a ‘good choice.’

No. But he made a very good choice to go to Ferrari, I agree with his decision.

The reason for this was that Charles Leclerc would be overlooked after Hamilton entered the doors of Ferrari. The Monegasque also holds great potential to place himself among the greats in Formula 1. However, with the Brit’s late-career switch to Maranello, Binotto felt that Leclerc needed to be led to the championship goal and not the 39-year-old.

Because Ferrari was betting on other drivers and if Leclerc is the talent, it’s him that should’ve been led to the goal.

Fred Vasseur has not ‘revolutionalized a structural organization’ at Ferrari yet

Fred Vasseur’s leadership enabled the team to revive a strong pace and amass some impressive wins in the past two seasons. However, Mattia Binotto wasn’t too impressed with the Frenchman’s leadership. Binotto claimed that Vasseur led the project in the name of continuity and did not revolutionalize or form a structural organization in Ferrari.

Fred has been able to continue the project in the name of continuity, he has not revolutionized a structured and functional organization. He also made his own choices, but I repeat it: if Ferrari wins I am happy because I know the team and I know how much effort it was spent to bring it to a certain level.

The Italian outfit’s performance in the 2024 season has been quite stable with the team already amassing three race wins. The Italian constructor would still need to work extremely hard to have a realistic shot at contending for the championship
