Max Verstappen has had a difficult start to the 2025 season. The Dutchman’s campaign has been overshadowed by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The Red Bull star is trailing behind the two in the standings after another underwhelming result last weekend in Monaco. However, Verstappen is confident that things will improve at the next race in Barcelona.

The 27-year-old headed to Monaco after a stellar victory at the Emilia Romagna GP. Fans believed that this could be the turning point in Max Verstappen’s title bid. Unfortunately, this was not the case with Red Bull struggling in the narrow Monte Carlo circuit. Ultimately, Verstappen finished in fourth place after making a last-minute pitstop to abide by the mandated two-stop rule.

The Red Bull star acknowledged that Monte Carlo was simply a bad weekend for Milton Keynes, despite doing the best they could behind-the-scenes. Verstappen asserted that he expects a better result in Spain this weekend, which is the final leg of the triple header. Moreover, the Dutch driver insisted that things could be similar to the Emilia Romagna GP, where he took a dominant victory. As such, Red Bull fans can hope for a decent outing this time around.

Monaco was not our race, we did everything right, but in the end we couldn’t do much more after the result of the qualifications – in view of Spain, the last race of the triple appointment, we expect a better performance and closer to that of Imola. I think we should be more comfortable with the car and therefore more competitive.

Max Verstappen recalls fond memories of Spanish GP

The Barcelona circuit is stable on the F1 calendar. Albeit, the race will be replaced by the upcoming Madrid city circuit from next season. Thus, as the future of the track remains uncertain in Formula 1, Max Verstappen reflected upon his special memories ahead of the weekend.

The Spanish GP is a special race for Max Verstappen. This is the track where the Dutchman etched his name in history after winning the 2016 race on his debut for Red Bull Racing. Verstappen became the youngest-ever race winner, a record he still holds today. Moreover, his win solidified his place at Red Bull Racing.

Max Verstappen recalled that day, reminding fans that Barcelona was the start of his success in Formula 1. Now, the reigning world champion was focused on getting the best out of Red Bull this weekend.

The track has long curves and high-speed curves and it’s always nice to drive there. In Barcelona I won my first race in Formula 1, I hope to express the best version of ourselves this weekend.

The Barcelona track could indeed favor Red Bull Racing. Milton Keynes has had an edge when it comes to medium and high speed corners, while the team has struggled in low speed tracks such as Monaco. This would give Max Verstappen more confidence heading into the weekend, knowing that he could realistically win the race. Though, this will be far from easy with McLaren still having an advantage. Thus, it remains to be seen if Verstappen can take his third win of the season this weekend and keep his championship hopes alive.
