Lando Norris denied Max Verstappen a chance to clinch victory at Zandvoort, as Norris won with a massive 22-second gap. Verstappen addressed the issues that held him back from competing with Norris, focusing solely on his own race.
Max Verstappen discussed the problems he faced with the RB20 and his race performance. He wasn’t surprised by the feeling in the car because it wasn’t responding as he wanted. When Verstappen tried to turn left, the car didn’t turn as quickly or accurately as he expected. Despite his efforts to correct this issue during the race, the car’s response didn’t improve. This made it harder for him to drive the race effectively. Hence, the car wasn’t handling properly, and his attempts to fix it during the race didn’t work as intended.
I'm not surprised with how I was feeling in the car, I couldn't do anything, everything I was trying to do with the car during the race didn't really translate, when I steer left the car is not steering left immediately how I wanted it to.Max Verstappen told Sky Sports F1
Max Verstappen highlighted that it’s extremely difficult to figure out why the car was having problems and how to fix them. He explained that understanding the issue was complex and challenging. Because It’s not just about knowing there’s a problem, but it’s also about figuring out the exact cause and finding a solution.
It's very very complicated to understand why and how we can fix that.Max Verstappen added.
Max Verstappen claims he was focused on bringing the car on best possible position
Max Verstappen mentioned that he had trouble getting the tires to perform properly during the race. Because of this, he couldn’t drive as effectively as he wanted. Once he realized he couldn’t fix the tire issues, his main goal became to finish the race in the best position he could.
I couldn't really make the tires work, from that point onwards I was just focusing on bring it to the end in the best possible position.Max Verstappen stated.
Certainly, instead of trying to improve his performance, Verstappen focused on getting through the race and finishing as high as possible. He ended up in P2, which was a fair result given the struggles he faced with the car.
