Max Verstappen had glimpses of dominance in the 2025 season and suddenly joined the mix to contend for the driver’s title this year. The Dutchman came very close in terms of pace to the championship leaders in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Still, with just three races to go, Verstappen is 49 points adrift of the lead to Norris. As such, because of negligible chances to win the title from here on, the 28-year-old recalled the moment when the team lost the championship this time around.

After returning from the summer break, Max Verstappen‘s performance improved drastically. The Dutchman achieved a dominant winning streak and multiple podium finishes. Moreover, his meteoric rise from the pit lane to a podium finish at the Brazil GP has kept his title dreams alive. However, many people believe that closing down a 49-point deficit is far too difficult, even for the reigning world champion.

Max Verstappen recalled his entire 2025 season and how the championship was lost by the team despite having a realistic shot mid-way through the year. Despite a P3 finish in Brazil, Verstappen pointed out that he was now 49 points behind the championship leader. He reassured that he did not lose the championship in Brazil; rather, it happened long ago.

Surprisingly, Max Verstappen revealed that he lost the championship from race one until the Dutch GP. He reckoned that the team simply wasn’t fast enough, and he was trailing the championship lead a lot by then.

Verstappen did mention that the team improved significantly after the summer break and gained a lot of points, but it was never enough to have a realistic shot at the driver’s title. Ultimately, the 28-year-old highlighted that this was how Formula 1 worked, and he wasn’t too concerned even if he lost the title.

What are we – 49 points behind now? We didn’t lose the championship here or whatever, We lost the championship from race one until Zandvoort. We had a lot of weekends where we simply were not quick enough. Then, of course, you have a big gap. Then we had good moments where you get some points back, but not enough. That’s how the season goes.

Max Verstappen reveals his ‘focus’ for the remainder of the 2025 season

Although Max Verstappen is running low on motivation to win the driver’s title this year, he still isn’t scrapping the entire season away already. With three races to go, the Dutchman will aim to salvage all possible points. Hence, Verstappen talked about where his focus is for the remainder of the season and how he hopes to perform in the upcoming races.

Red Bull brought significant changes to Max Verstappen’s car in Brazil that helped him finish P3 ultimately. This newfound pace could be useful in the upcoming races, but Verstappen is unaware of his chances to succeed yet.

The 28-year-old reckoned that the coming tracks were very different from Interlagos, and hence it was difficult to talk about his competitiveness. Regardless, he and Milton Keynes would focus on the coming races and achieve the best possible results.

Very different tracks, so it’s difficult to know to be honest. That’s what we have to focus on. That’s what we will focus on in the coming races.

Max Verstappen noted.

Despite the difficulties for Max Verstappen in the 2025 season, he remained a dominant force and did not let the performance struggles dictate his performance. The 28-year-old has earned applause from all around the grid and is being regarded as one of the greats in the pinnacle of motorsport. Hence, Verstappen has gained a lot this year, even if he doesn’t win his fifth consecutive title.
