Max Verstappen‘s girlfriend Kelly Piquet was present on the sidelines as the Dutchman struggled with performances in the last few races. The model had arrived in the US even before the event started on Friday and explored Austin, where she even spotted a ‘Max Furstappen’ mascot.

In qualifying, Verstappen was on course to beat Lando Norris’ lap time, but George Russell’s crash in the final sector interrupted him. Despite the setback, he finished only 0.031 seconds behind Norris, a significant improvement from being 20 seconds behind in the last race.

Red Bull’s progress was evident as the 27-year-old celebrated his P2 finish by running toward Piquet and sharing a joyful kiss.

Max Verstappen explains why he missed out on pole position during the US GP qualifying session

In the final part of the lap, which had been tricky and caught out several drivers during the session, Max Verstappen seemed to have a strong chance of securing pole position for the US Grand Prix. His first sector was impressive and it gave him a solid opportunity to grab the top spot.

However, George Russell’s crash forced an early end to the session, stopping Verstappen from completing his lap. The Dutchman later explained that he had already lost some time during his first run at Turn 19. He believed that recovering that time would have been enough to secure pole position.

I lost quite a bit of lap time there (at Turn 19 on the first run), that would have already been enough for pole. So on the second lap there was time to find, for free, but I never really got to that corner.

Max Verstappen told SkySportsF1

The RB20’s pace looks to be back, meaning Verstappen won’t struggle as much to battle Lando Norris for the first place. In the last few races, the three-time reigning champion seemed to be missing the pace he needed. However, now that Red Bull has made improvements, fans feel optimistic and believe that the Dutchman is back in form and ready to defend his title successfully.
