Max Verstappen began the season as the title favorite and dominated the first few rounds of the championship. On the other hand, Red Bull seemed to have slumped in performance, as the Dutchman has only won five out of the eight races. Amid the downturn in performance, the reigning champion fears that the resurfacing of the track in Canada could spell disaster for him again.

Red Bull had been the benchmark for the F1 grid for the past few seasons. Moreover, Adrian Newey‘s magic was considered their ace of spades, but since the announcement of his departure, the team has been struggling to keep up with their rivals. On the other hand, the Canadian GP organizers revealed that the track was resurfaced recently, often known to make the asphalt slippery as the tarmac is not rubbered in.

Max Verstappen feared its repercussions as he reckoned that the resurfacing could bring some unwanted surprises for his team.

We have to wait and see [how we'll perform in Canada], new surface as well I think, that might also give us some surprises. But it is probably also not going to be our strongest weekend because of that. But probably a little bit better than [Monaco].
Max Verstappen said in an interview with Motorsport

The Dutchman admitted that he had to wait till Friday to experience how the car would feel around the street circuit. He further reckoned that this change could be full of surprises and spell havoc for the Austrian stable. On the other hand, he claimed that he anticipates this weekend to be better than the one in Monaco, but no conclusions can be made beforehand.

Christian Horner reckons Red Bull is in trouble

While Verstappen fears that the Red Bull camp is in trouble owing to the track’s bumpy nature, on the contrary, Christian Horner is distressed. Is is mostly because of McLaren and Ferrari‘s rapid climb up to the top.

The Brit explained the dire situation that Red Bull is tangled in currently.

It's a track that we've performed well at previously. They've resurfaced the whole circuit again. So let's see. But Ferrari, McLaren, they're quick. It was always going to happen that there was going to be convergence. This has been a tough weekend, but we're still leading both championships.
Christian Horner said in an interview with Motorsport

Horner agreed to Verstappen’s fears of resurfacing at the Montreal track. But was focused on the other problems that the Austrian giant had to tackle, in the form of their arch-rivals McLaren and Ferrari. Thus, the Austrian is in a tough spot and is battling to conserve its lead in the championship standings.

Apart from this, McLaren and Ferrari have won several races in the ongoing season, with the win in Monaco being the most recent. An unexpected yet exciting championship battle could ensue as the rivals close up the gaps to each other.
