Max Verstappen crashed into McLaren’s Lando Norris on lap 65 of the Austrian Grand Prix, which ended in early retirement for the latter. Verstappen has therefore been penalized with two penalty points on his racing super-license for the offence.
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have been the two most consistent drivers on the grid this season, and have showcased some hard but fair racing. Unfortunately, the incident in Spielberg was most certainly an unfair exchange between the two, which cost them the victory around the Red Bull Ring.
Verstappen was awarded a 10-second penalty moments after the incident with Norris in Austria, who was forced to retire due to extensive damage to his car. However, as per racingnews365, the FIA did not spare the three-time world champion with only a time penalty, as they have reportedly imposed two penalty points on the Dutch driver’s super-license.
The addition of two penalty points now lands Max Verstappen on four penalty points for this campaign out of a possible 12, which would induce a race ban. Verstappen will now be more careful for the upcoming races of the season but will be keen on getting back to winning ways in Silverstone.
Oscar Piastri left frustrated after missing out on Austria win
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri finished P2 on the podium for the second time this season in an exciting yet controversial Austrian GP. However, the 23-year-old Australian driver has expressed his frustration after missing out on the win by only 1.9 seconds despite starting P7.
There’s a lot of what ifs and maybes, obviously starting from yesterday [after the deleted lap time in qualifying]. I know that’s only my fourth podium in F1, but so close to a win, it hurts a little bit.Oscar Piastri said in an interview with F1
Oscar Piastri has been a tireless performer for McLaren in only his second professional season at the pinnacle of motorsport, scoring 112 points across 11 races. However, the talented driver was arguably the closest he has ever been to a win and has repented on the missed opportunities in Spielberg despite an electrifying performance.
Piastri’s outing on the weekend was the sole reason why McLaren still finds themselves in the fight for the title this season after an unfortunate DNF for Lando Norris. The Woking-based team will now look to further notch points on their leaderboard as F1 heads into the home race for the papayas in Silverstone.
