Max Verstappen‘s usual dominance came to an end during the recent race at Miami. The driver was beaten by Lando Norris who achieved his maiden victory. But, during the race fans were able to witness a rare mistake from the Dutchman.
On lap 22 Max Verstappen hit the bollard at the chicane kerb at the tricky turn 16 which has caught a lot of drivers off guard over the years. Following the race, the three-time World Champion was asked why he hit the bollard and surprisingly, he had a very sarcastic reply to it.
The Dutchman also added how after the hit there was no damage to his RB20, and how it made navigating the corner easier for other drivers. The 26-year-old didn’t seem upset with his out-of-character impact with the bollard. He in his own unique way said:
I didn't like it so I decided to take it out. I guess so its crash test done!Max Verstappen said in his post race interview
Other than the impact with the bollard at the Miami street circuit, things were smooth sailing for the 26-year-old, but the whole momentum of the race changed on lap 28. From that point on, it was all Lando Norris amassing the limelight.
Red Bull confirms Max Verstappen had damage after hitting bollard in Miami
While Max Verstappen during the post-race interviews admitted that there was no major damage to his car following the impact with the bollard, he wasn’t able to keep up with the rapid pace of Lando Norris after the safety car ended. He seemed to be struggling for balance in his RB20.
Verstappen admitted how he thinks there wasn’t any damage after the mistake on lap 22. But, following the race, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner revealed that his driver had massive damage to his RB20’s floor after hitting the kerb and bollard.
I don’t think we had a great balance all weekend. Obviously, he hit the bollard around lap 20 and that has actually done quite a lot of damage to the underside of the car, so we will have to look at exactly what the effect of that was.
Christian Horner after the race
The 50-year-old added how Verstappen and Red Bull in general were struggling with balance all weekend, and how hitting the bollard just added to the issues. Keeping in view everything that has been discussed, had the 26-year-old not sustained damage, the race might have proved a lot trickier for McLaren and Norris.
