Max Verstappen has been the driver to beat in Formula 1 since 2022. The Dutch driver dominated the first two seasons in the ground-effect era and faced a stiff challenge last year. However, Verstappen will likely continue his tried and tested aggressive racing style this year.
The four-time world champion was riddled in controversies in 2024. Max Verstappen was involved in a handful of on-track incidents against title contender Lando Norris. Though, he still managed to keep calm and win his fourth F1 title in a row.
The highly competitive 2024 season forced Verstappen to push himself to the limit. Despite the pressure, he maintained his natural aggression on the track. Now, it seems that things will likely not change for the reigning world champion when the upcoming season kicks off in Melbourne.
Max Verstappen has no reason to change
The reigning world champion was successfully in defending his title during a challenging campaign last year. Max Verstappen did have a few skirmishes on track. However, this only bolstered his position as rivals such as Norris could not really match his aggression.
Verstappen is now aware that the rest of the grid will likely not resort to fierce battles on-track. This gives the Red Bull driver the freedom to potentially race harder in high pressure situations. Such maneuvers could spark controversy, but as long as it brings results, the Dutchman would not be bothered.
Moreover, the 2025 season is expected to be even closer in terms of competition. Max Verstappen could find himself in more difficult situations in the coming months. At such circumstances, the 27-year-old might decide to flex his muscle to gain an advantage.
Though, if such a trend continues, it is likely that rivals will try to match Verstappen. Lando Norris could push himself closer to the Red Bull driver. Yet, from past instances, it is clear that the advantage will remain with the reigning world champion in such situations.
