The Sao Paulo GP, commonly referred to as the Brazilian GP is one of the most iconic races on the F1 calendar. The Grand Prix takes place at the historic Interlagos Circuit. However, the 2023 iteration of the race was marked by a few incidents such as the destruction of a roof during Qualifying. Now, reports have emerged that the Brazilian police caught 10 fugitives during the race weekend.
As reported by Reuters, the 10 fugitives were trying to make their way inside the circuit during the weekend. These individuals included people who were facing convictions for robbery and even pedophilia. Sao Paulo’s public security department mentioned that this operation was part of ‘The Great Wall of SP’ program.
Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite praised the efforts of the authorities. As it was the first time the program had been used for a major international sporting event. Certainly, it is a massive accomplishment for Sao Paulo’s government as the Brazilian GP was attended by over 267,000 fans this year. The race has faced some security issues in the past. However, it is clear that the local authorities have drastically improved the measures to combat any threat to the race weekend.
Brazilian GP wins over fans with some exciting moments
The Interlagos race witnessed drama from the get-go as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out on the formation lap. Moreover, the chaos only increased at the race start with multiple cars incurring damage in the first three laps. Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen were two other drivers who were forced to retire before the first red flag.
The 267,000 fans saw some action-packed racing with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez going wheel-to-wheel till the final lap. This provided the viewers with a stunning photo finish for the final podium spot. However, attendees were not surprised to see Max Verstappen take home yet another victory this season.
The Brazilian GP has certainly proved itself to be an exciting race once again. The Interlagos circuit saw a rise in the number of spectators this season with F1’s popularity only growing in the last few years. However, fans would now be shifting focus to the much-awaited Las Vegas GP. As the inagural race is the penultimate round of the 2023 season.
