“A lesser driver might have parked it up,” David Coulthard appreciates Fernando Alonso for ‘carrying on’ despite his horrific US GP crash
David and Fernando
David Coulthard, the Former F1 driver, has praised Fernando Alonso for showing extreme courage after his high-speed ‘air-borne’ crash at the United States Grand Prix.
It was lap 22 of the race when Fernando Alonso in an attempt to get past Lance Stroll bumped into the back of his AMR 22 and went flying into the air.
Moreover, the Spaniard after landing hit the Aramco barriers and completely wrecked the front wing of his car, but despite the horrific incident, he was able to limp back to the pits and to most people’s surprise was able to carry on in the race.
It was an amazing sight to see the 41-year going back onto the circuit after the change of the front wing on his car, and while talking about it, after the race, Alonso said, “When I was in the air, I was a bit scared because it was very dangerous when I landed on the asphalt, I thought it was race over.”
“It was my best race of the season, but the fear is still in my stomach, after the crash, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the race. I just wanted to finish the race.”
David Coulthard’s take on Fernando Alonso’s exploits at Austin
While the whole F1 community has praised Fernando Alonso for his courage at the US GP, David Coulthard has also given his opinion of the Alpine driver’s crash and said, “I think a lesser driver might have just parked it up.”
“They would have been ‘well I’ve been in the air, I’ve bounced off a barrier, I should retire the car’ but that’s just not part of his mindset.”
“That’s why he’s committed to Formula One going forward at 41 years old. That’s why he’s still a desirable driver, a lot of the youngsters can certainly take a lesson from that.”
David Coulthard has applauded the former 2-time F1 World Champion for his daring attitude at the United States Grand Prix and believes that the younger generation can learn a lesson or two from Alonso’s outing.
Fernando Alonso finished the race well in the Top 10, however, a 30-second penalty after the race meant that he finished out of the points-scoring positions.
The Spaniard has had a lot of bad luck in 2022 and considering how up and down the season has been for him because of A522’s reliability issues, would he be able to score points at the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix?
