Max Verstappen has been the driver to beat at the pinnacle of motor racing for the last few years. Red Bull has been reaping the benefits of it massively, and amidst the team’s ever-growing stronghold over its rivals, the Austrian outfit’s Chief Technical Officer, Adrian Newey, has given his verdict on the prospect of having Fernando Alonso as Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull.
Fernando Alonso, since making his return in F1, has gone from strength to strength with each passing year. He has tremendously led the Aston Martin F1 team to the fourth position in the Constructors Championship and, with every outing, is proving why he deserves to race with the best. Adrian Newey admires Alonso and views having him as Max Verstappen’s teammate as ‘interesting’.
While shedding light on the same in detail ahead of next month’s Oatar Grand Prix, he said, as reported by Soymotor, “A duo with a veteran number one and a younger one would be interesting. For example, Fernando is one of the most formidable competitors in history and perhaps famous for not getting along very well with his teammates, let’s say.“
“Max against Fernando, Lewis against Fernando again, it would be interesting to see Fernando with all the experience he has now if he is different from the driver he was in 2007 with McLaren. I think it would be different, it gives the impression that he has softened that stance.” Newey has given a fascinating take on the Verstappen-Alonso prospect.

Max Verstappen has decimated his Red Bull teammates
While Adrian Newey has admitted that a Verstappen-Alonso duo at Red Bull would be extremely fascinating, one has to keep in mind how brutally the former bashed his past Red Bull teammates. Adept drivers like Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly found it extremely difficult to hang with the might of the Dutchman and, thus, were shown exit doors after a short period.
Moreover, the same could be true for the current Red Bull driver, Sergio Perez. While he has managed to fare better than the drivers mentioned above, his record against Verstappen is not something to be proud of. Perez has also found it extremely hard, and his 2023 results give a precise representation of how difficult it is to be the Dutchman’s teammate at Red Bull.

The Milton-Keynes-based team deems Max Verstappen as their most prized possession and this is one of the main reasons why the team has tied him down until the end of the 2028 campaign. Several esteemed personalities tip Verstappen as the driver who could break Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher’s F1 record.
