Alex Albon reflects on his time at Red Bull, says he got a career-defining chance “very early” in his career
Alex Albon
When Alexander Albon seized the third position in the 2018 F2 Championship, with only seven points behind Lando Norris, and entered Formula 1 with a brand new Red Bull contract, everything was going well for the young Thai racer. But soon enough, the Red Bull executives judged his race results and came to the opinion that he lacked the grit it takes to race for a top team like Red Bull and partner a racer like Max Verstappen, and thus he was asked to make way for Sergio Perez ahead of the F1 2021 season.
Since then, Alex Albon has had nothing short of a tumultuous F1 career. He had to take a break in 2021 due to a lack of seat in the highest league of motorsports, and he came back in 2022, to drive for Williams, after George Russell left to partner Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes. Albon has been doing a good job in the British team, having scored all three of its points in this season. In a recent interview with Auto, Motor und Sport, Albon emphasized on his learning experience at Williams, and how he is grabbing this opportunity to drive for the team with absolute eagerness.
Alex Albon regrets losing out on Red Bull opportunity
Losing out on a year in the career of a Formula 1 racer is a big deal as the drivers are always in a cutthroat competition to secure a spot at one of the teams. Alex Albon realised many important things during his sabbatical, and now that he is back in the game, the Red Bull Academy recruit wants to do it right this time. He acknowledged that there are many talented racers on the grid right now, and he wishes to get to their level after having sat out an entire season due to the lack of a plausible contract.
Albon listed out the major players in the grid right now as he said, “Max has the most races to his name. He is used to racing at the top in a top team. Charles has also made a step this year. Then there is George, who is fighting with Lewis. That is very impressive. And then there is Lando, who is driving very strong.”
In the end, Alex Albon made it clear that he is trying to work past his regret for not being able to seize his chance with Red Bull when the opportunity presented itself to him. The racer said he was too young at the time when the career-defining option to drive for one of the top 3 teams came to him, and he did not make good use of it. The Thai racer harbors the belief that every racer gets a good chance once, and he said, “Mine came very early in my career.”
