“An extraordinary person who helped to make Ferrari great”: Legendary engineer and close collaborator of Enzo Ferrari Mauro Forghieri passes away at 87
Mauro Forghieri
On the day of November 2, 2022, the town City of Modena fell into deep grief as Mauro Forghieri, the man who played a key role behind Ferrari’s sky-high achievements in motorsports, breathed his last. Forghieri was the last of what some people call as “total engineers”. He was chosen by the great Enzo Ferrari when he was only 20, to join his team of car designers. But Forghieri’w expertise extends much farther than just designing the Ferrari racecars.
After being given the responsibility of watching over the entire racing department for Ferrari, Mauro Forghieri engaged in the making of the world-famous GTO series of cars, and he also designed engines and gearboxes beside the car models. During his time at Lamborghini, Forghieri also designed the V12 engine, which was later used in F1.
Losing Mauro Forghieri is not only a sad moment for Formula 1, but for the entire motorsports world. The Mayor of Modena paid his respect to the late Forghieri, who has been responsible for Ferrari’s 54 Grand Prix titles, 4 Drivers’ World Championship wins, as well as 7 World Constructors’ Championship victories.

Having been closely associated with Enzo Ferrari, the revolutionary mind who led to the foundation of the oldest and most successful team in F1 history, Forghieri is considered to be one of the legends in motorsports history. Speaking on his demise, Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, the Mayor of Modena, said, “Not only Modena, but the whole country loses a point of reference, an extraordinary Modenese who has contributed to making Ferrari and the territory great“.
With Mauro Forghieri’s passing, the world of motorsports has now lost two great personalities within a span of a few weeks–first, Dietrich Mateschitz, owner of Red Bull Racing, and now the key person behind Ferrari’s engines.
