McLaren F1 team boss Andrea Stella was promoted up the order to lead the team with the announcement being made before the 2023 F1 season. The reigns of the Papaya squad lied with former boss Andreas Seidl. However, he left the team to join Alpha Romeo Sauber for this season. Nevertheless, the season hasn’t gone the way McLaren expected it to go.
The FIA along with F1 made some massive changes from 2021 where the cost cap was introduced. Teams would only be able to spend a specific amount and those who violated it would have to pay a fine and get point deductions and a possible disqualification. Along with that, a massive rule change came into play in 2022 which led to the cars changing completely.
Andrea Stella completed a review of the leadership structure and McLaren and re- appointed former sporting director Gil de Ferran as a non-executive consultant. The reason behind this move was the way that the regulatory framework has become more complicated,” said Stella. The cost cap system had been a massive factor that has contributed to the complexities.

In an interview, here is what he had to say regarding the rulebook. “ It is complex for the teams and is complex even for the FIA,” he said. “If you think of the financial regulations, if you think how long it takes for the FIA to actually check the declaration, the submissions, it takes months and this is acknowledged. There’s actually a workstream that we all share as teams. Certainly, we support as McLaren, that is promoted by the FIA, of simplification of the regulations,” he continued.
When it comes to McLaren, the team hasn’t been doing well. With Lando Norris and Rookie Oscar Piastri taking the helm, the Papaya squad hasn’t been able to produce good results in a long time. While the team was able to score points in Azerbaijan, their performance dropped yet again in Miami showcasing their inconsistency. For a team that planned to race at the front of the pack by this time, it seems like their goal has still not turned into reality.
