Michael Andretti, statistically one of the most successful drivers in the history of American open-wheel car racing, is the current team owner across multiple racing competitions in the United States. The American has been rallying behind the FIA for the last several months to put forth his bid to enter Formula 1 as the 11th team.

Andretti revealed that his team is partnering up with Cadillac, a General Motors-owned company. However, It was unclear, until now, who would supply the engine for the Formula 1 cars that may eventually line up on the Championship grid. However, Cadillac’s announcement of their interest in building a power unit for the future team from 2028 has cleared out the query.

General Motors President, Mark Reuss, commented on Cadillac’s announcement, as reported by Motorsport.

It is refreshing to see an American resurgence in the mechanics of Formula 1 as Cadillac becomes the second American supplier to enter Formula 1 in the near future alongside Ford, who will be partnering up with Red Bull. Six engine suppliers have now been confirmed for 2026 which are Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine, Audi, Honda, and Red Bull Ford Powertrains. However, the Andretti team is aiming to enter F1 much before Cadillac’s plan of becoming an engine supplier in 2028.

What the FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem had said about Michael Andretti’s bid

The FIA had revealed that Andretti Autosport had progressed through a significant round in the ongoing selection process for the 11th team as the clear front-runner. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem had emphasized the stringent criteria a team is required to pass and had commented on how the FIA are looking for a team that would add value to the sport.

Our objective was to only approve entries which satisfied the set criteria and illustrated that they would add value to the sport.

It was revealed that Andretti’s team was the sole applicant to advance to the third and the final stage in selection. The FIA further demanded Andretti Autosport to find an original Engine supplier rather than scout for an existing one and had revealed this is to be a decisive marker in the team’s bid in joining Formula 1. If the Andretti team passes the selection progress, it will become the second American presence in the F1 paddock, alongside Haas.

This development aligns with the sport’s efforts to expand its footprint and capitalize on the growing interest of Formula 1 in the United States. While the final selection process is still pending, the Andretti team remains hopeful in acing FIA’s tests as they prepare to join the very peak of Motorsport, sooner than later.
