The competitiveness of Formula 1 has been an issue for a long time, inciting the FIA to introduce regulations periodically to prevent long-standing regulations to be taken advantage of. Mercedes notably dominated after the 2014 regulations, while Red Bull turned the tables on them by adapting well to the 202 regulations.

The latest changes in 2022 saw Red Bull design aerodynamically dominant cars designed by Adrian Newey. The RB18 and RB19 saw unbridled success, breaking multiple records across dominant 2022 and 2023 seasons. Aston Martin’s performance director, Tom McCullough believes this will change in the upcoming 2024 season however, as rival teams to Red Bull have regained footing on car development.

Some teams have developed really well this year, but I think they'd be the first to admit they started badly as well. So I think next year, it's going to be fantastic for the sport.

Aston Martin had an incredible season in 2023, despite a drop-off towards the end. The Silverstone-based team made a major comeback from their previous campaigns, earning eight podiums with star driver Fernando Alonso, though he was eventually disappointed with their finish in the standings.

Aston Martin admits they cannot repeat 2023 success story

Aston Martin pulled off one of the biggest steps forward in terms of progress for the 2023 season. Going from one of the backmarkers in 2022 to competing at the front in 2023, even competing with the second-fastest car at some tracks, they had a huge comeback.

Replacing one multiple World Champion in 2023, with Fernando Alonso departing Sebastian Vettel, the Silverstone-based outfit had eight top-three finishes in the year, a record for them. However, their performance director Tom McCullough has said another step forward as big as last year will not be possible for the 2024 campaign, with rival teams catching up.

Obviously, I think it's helped when you weren't as strong last season to make such a big jump. And if we were to make the same jump now, we'll be well ahead of Red Bull, which is not going to happen!
Tom McCullough said, as reported by motorsport.com

Aston Martin finished fifth in the Constructors’ Standings, an all-time highest for them. They also managed to have a driver finish in the top 5 of the Drivers’ Standings for the first time, with Alonso claiming a well-deserved fourth place behind Lewis Hamilton.
