Aston Martin considers Fernando Alonso as a potential replacement for Sebastian Vettel in 2023
According to reports, Alpine driver Fernando Alonso could replace Sebastian Vettel in Aston Martin in 2023
Fernando Alonso made an amazing return with Alpine in 2021, and also managed to score points and a podium. During the same time, last year, Sebastian Vettel moved from Ferrari to the new Aston Martin team, where he managed to score a couple of points and podium as well.
Since Aston Martin last year was a new team, it was barely a test for them to see how competitive they are and how well they could perform, and with the regulation changes in 2022, Aston Martin was expected to show their actual form.
However, since the start of this year, the Aston Martins have been really weak, with some DNFs in the practice and qualifying sessions as well, they stand second last in the constructors’ championship with 5 points, which were scored only in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Although this sounds like a disaster for Sebastian Vettel, the legendary four time World Champion, it is partly because of the car which has failed to perform, and thus both Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel have failed to score enough.
Following up on this, there have been reports that the team owner, Lawrence Stroll, might be interested in giving Vettel’s seat to Alonso for 2023, observing both drivers’ performance.
Fernando Alonso stands in the drivers’ championship with 2 points, and Sebastian Vettel with 4 points, but, anyways, Alonso’s performance in the entire 2021 season was much better than Sebastian Vettel, where Alonso finished 10th in the championship with 81 points, and Sebastian Vettel on 12th with 43 points.
This might be Sebastian Vettel’s final season in Aston Martin.
While there are no official statements, but according to reports the authorities in Aston Martin are in very much favor of bringing in Fernando Alonso and replacing Sebastian Vettel. “Last week he (Vettel) himself showed that he would not be unwilling to make the switch,” said GPBlog.
If this actually happens, then there are no reports or sources saying in which team Sebastian Vettel would go. Vettel did show interest in returning to Red Bull, where he won his 4 World Championships in a row, but there are no such reports about Red Bull signing the German back; and with reigning World Champion Max Verstappen & Sergio Perez in the team, it is hard to say if Red Bull would let go of any of the drivers.
As of now, Sebastian Vettel has scored 4 points overall, all of them being scored in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with his teammate scoring 1 point in the same race, bringing the team up one place in the championship.
