“At his age, the slump can come from one year to the next,” Laurent Rossi opines on parting ways with F1 legend, Fernando Alonso
Laurent and Rossi
Fernando Alonso said sayonara to the Alpine team during the 2022 F1 summer break and the French team’s CEO, Laurent Rossi has recently stated why the team was not able to provide the Spaniard what he was asking for.
It is believed that Fernando Alonso asked the Enstone-based team for a 2-year contract extension, however, Alpine was not willing to accept his demands, and thus, the 41-year-old decided to switch to Aston Martin.
Laurent Rossi has recently stressed the situation and said, “For me, he is one of the best drivers of all time, but he is 41 years old. In two years, he will be 43. You can’t plan that far ahead…“
“At this age, the slump can come from one year to the next.”
As per Rossi’s comments, it is pretty clear that Alpine was having doubts about whether Alonso, in the future years, would have been able to perform at the level that he is performing at in the current campaign.
The team has sighted the aging body of the former 2-time World Champion as one of the main reasons behind shying away from providing Alonso with a contract extension.

Fernando Alonso has signed for Aston Martin on a multi-year deal
Fernando Alonso is going to be seen in the green of the Aston Martin Formula One team for the next few years, and they would be hoping that the Spaniard would be able to lead the team to the front end of the grid.
The 2022 campaign has been a disappointing one for the Silverstone-based team and has struggled massively in trying to keep pace with the midfield teams.
After 16 rounds, Aston Martin has only got 25 points to its name and is in the ninth position in the Constructors Championship. Moreover, the way the team has performed so far, it does not look likely that they would be able to make the jump on AlphaTauri who is currently eighth in the standings.
While the 2022 season does not have much left for them in terms of hope, the next campaign is going to start for them full of high optimism with Fernando Alonso in the cockpit of their livery.
Fernando Alonso is going to demand a lot from the team in terms of a solid package and it is going to be up to Mike Krack and Co. to keep the Spaniard happy, otherwise, things could turn ugly very quickly for them.
