Nico Rosberg, the son of 1982 F1 World Champion Keke Rosberg, walked out from professional Formula One racing at the end of 2016 after taking an early retirement. But his life kept revolving around motorsports even after he took a break from it. Today, the Monaco resident is a successful F1 vlogger, with a YouTube channel that is 1.37 million subscribers strong. Besides that, he has a number of businesses and partnerships in the field of motorsports, under the aegis of his own brand–Rosberg Racing.

And now, the 2016 World Champion and former Mercedes driver has announced on his Twitter account that he is starting a new initiative as a part of the activities funded by Rosberg Racing. This project will look for three talented female racers, and will fund their further training the sport, alongwith their special tutoring under RxR driver Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and RxR CEO Nico Rosberg himself.

Motorsports is still chiefly dominated by men, and even though huge strides are being taken to address gender-based discrimination in this field, Nico Rosberg said, “There’s still so much that needs to be done in terms of equality and women empowerment.”

The former racer also went on to say, “Being a woman in motorsport isn’t easy, & many girls don’t get the chance to realise their hopes for the future. For this reason, we’re paying it forward with RXR. To commemorate International day of the girl child, we’re offering three girls the opportunity to be mentored by our driver Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and myself.”

The criteria for the applicants to be considered for the mentorship include an age barrier of 13-18 years, and the girls must also have “a successful track record in karting”. The tutoring sessions will be conducted via Zoom, and Mikaela and Nico will talks to the mentees about their goals in racing and also how to proceed with a career in motorsports.
