With every passing day, motorsports is gathering more and more fanfare. But with the rising fame, comes some grave problems that most racers do not often discuss on public forums. The motorsports fans are so passionate about the races that they often forget the drivers are human beings of flesh and blood, and they end up treating the drivers in an absolutely abhorrent way. This has happened many a times in case of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton during their 2020 duel where their fans often attacked the drivers after the races.

This time, the victim of such abuse from the fans is none other than the IndyCar racer Callum Ilott. The British driver, who is known to many because of his Formula 2 races, had shifted to IndyCar racing for Juncos Hollinger Racing in 2022. He is currently recruited under the Ferrari Drivers’ Academy, and served as the reserve driver for Alfa Romeo in 2021. The Ferrari protegé took to his Twitter wall to share the news of the death threats that he has been receiving lately because of an incident at the IndyCar race at Long Beach.

In 2020, Callum Ilott was placed second in the F2 World Championship after Mick Schumacher, and the vica-World Champion talked about the abuse he has been subjected to on his social media account. He said, “It’s an important reminder to all new and old fans/people. Respect goes both ways. Although I have thick skin and am used to this behaviour occasionally. One day it will go too far to someone who can’t deal with it as well as others.”

It had all started at the IndyCar race at Beach, when Callum Ilott’s team made an ill-timed pitstop decision. The Briton came out of the pits ahead of his teammate Agustin Canapino. Thus, Canapino was stuck in his position, and when the Argentine racer tried to charge moments later, he crashed with his car. This caused the fans to target their massive hatred against Ilott.

The 24-year-old racer did not give any initial response to the messages he received. But ultimately, he decided to speak about it on a public forum like Twitter so that everybody gets to know what the drivers have to go through whenever they are involved in any trackside incident. Callum Ilott’s tweet about the death threats he has received has been reposted many times and he has received support from many Twitter users who have expressed their distaste at the fans who threatened him like this.
