Can Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ resurgence prove a threat to Charles Leclerc and Ferrari’s position in their respective championships?

It’s been a complete turnaround for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton in the last few races as find themselves on Ferrari tails as we move into the business end of the season. The team from Germany had a torrid start to the season with their porpoising issues, which forced them to fight with the midfield battlers like Alpine and McLaren. This was an unprecedented situation for a team that has been used to fighting for poles and wins in previous seasons.

But, this season has been full of changes as FIA decided to bring in a massive change in regulations. What this meant that all teams had to improvise which led to uncertainty at the season. Unfortunately for Mercedes, it didn’t work out as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell struggled for any sort of pace and grip on the race. However, Mercedes have pulled themselves back into the game with minor tweaks and some help from the FIA.

This help has allowed Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to secure some impressive results for the team. Courtesy to such results, Mercedes finds themselves 30 points behind Ferrari. This has also made the race for second place in the driver’s championship wide open. With Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez struggling, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have pulled themselves back into contention.

Toto Wolff has been delighted with the recovery that Mercedes has been able to make off late. Mercedes’ Team principal after the Hungarian GP said, “I think you need to acknowledge Max in the Red Bull is just simply, at the moment – I think also Charles with the Ferrari – ahead of everybody else.”

“And I think with Lewis and Budapest, that’s a success story. And I think we lost that race with him yesterday.”

“At least we have a result we can work with. We had a really bad Friday, so we know what not to do. So we’ll do the opposite. But Spa is very different. So let’s not celebrate yet that we are there because we aren’t yet.”

With Mercedes taking big steps, it lays down the foundation for an exciting second half of the season. Now, it will on Ferrari to respond to the strong pace that Mercedes has shown. Red Bull might be a step too far for both of these teams but the fight for P2 in the championship is pretty much on.
