Canadian GP 2007: A beaver once robbed an F1 driver of his first-ever Formula 1 points
Looking back to when the Super Aguri pit crew were so focused on the race and failed to notice their driver pitting.
Lewis Hamilton
The 2007 Canadian GP is very special for the obvious reason. It was Sir Lewis Hamilton’s maiden Grand Prix win in Formula 1 with McLaren. There was a lot of hype and pressure for the Briton as he started on pole. It was his first pole position in Formula 1 and was his day to show the world what he was capable of. It was supposed to be a battle of nerves between him and his teammate Fernando Alonso.
As the duo would have liked to compete with Ferrari, unfortunately, enough Alonso and Hamilton were starting side by side. Hamilton prevented Alonso from overtaking right at the start of the race. It was a matter of ego for Alonso as he could not let a rookie take the win from him, however, he ran wide and that cost him his position.
There were long straights and plenty of opportunities for overtaking. But that was not the only interesting part. It was such a nerve-wracking race from the start. The Super Aguri competed from 2006-2008, it was a Suzuki team based in Japan but operated from England. In fact, it was so intense that the team’s mechanics were very much focused on the race and failed to notice their driver Anthony Davidson pitting.

Robert Kubica had a horrifying crash in the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix
Davidson had to make a pitstop after hitting a beaver, due to which he had damage on his front wings, the pit crew were initially not ready for it, eventually they noticed him. It was a race filled with drama. During the Grand Prix, the safety car was deployed four times. Robert Kubica had a terrifying crash. While the red light was on 2 drivers exited the pit lane and got disqualified.
It was a race that was going well for Super Aguri until the pitlane incident. Davidson finished 11th. It was the race that put Lewis Hamilton’s face on the newspapers, the first driver of colour to win a Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion secured his maiden victory in this race. It was a call for celebrations. A new rivalry was formed, a driver born to challenge Fernando Alonso, the beast on track.
Time has gone by quickly, now the team Super Aguri does not exist and all the drivers who participated in this Grand Prix have retired except for Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The duo are preparing for the upcoming 2023 season.
