Canadian Grand Prix 2022: Sergio Perez’s Crash Causes a Red Flag in the Qualifying, George Russell gets bested by Lewis Hamilton

The 2022 Canadian Grand Prix had its qualifying session produce some of the most exciting moments in the 2022 F1 season so far. A rain soaked qualifying session is always fun to watch because it’s almost certain that people will mess up trying to push hard and the some of the midfield or even boots tom tier cars would have the chance to break into the top rows of the starting grid, which are usually reserved for the Red Bulls and the Ferraris.
The first major talking point of the session came during Q2 when Sergio Perez failed to slow down and went straight on into the barriers. He was running P8 at that point in time when he locked up his front tyres and his car simply didn’t turn in prior to a chicane. He went straight on and hit the tecpro barriers at quite some speed.
The Mexican tried his best to find reverse gear and get back to the track, but even after putting his car on reverse, failed to do so. This was because his front wing got lodged under the barriers and that marked the end of qualifying for Sergio Perez.

The crash brought out the only Red Flag of the qualifying session as the barriers had to be fixed. Sergio Perez took a long walk back to the pits as his car was hauled away by the marshalls.
George Russell’s risky decision did not pay off in Q3
Another major talking point was later in Q3 when the track started to dry off and the drivers started to get unsure whether they should run on the intermediates or switch to the slicks.
Mercedes driver George Russell was one of the first people to take that risk as he came out on the softs. If he would have managed to keep his car on the track, it was almost certain that he could have put up the fastest time on the board.
However the risk did not pay off for the young Briton. Soon after starting his lap he faced a huge pool of standing water at Turn 1. And even though he managed to tip toe through there. Turn 2 too proved to be too wet for him as he spun out trying to get the power down and went into the barriers. He did get some damage to the rear wings and that was it in the Qualifying for George Russell. He finished P8 in the end and will start alongside Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.
