Carlos Sainz struggled to match teammate Charles Leclerc during the start of the 2022 F1 season. Although, as the season continued, Sainz improved significantly to compete alongside the Monegasque driver. Many have speculated this progress is partly due to the development of the F1-75. It had been rumored that Ferrari had helped Carlos by suiting the car to his driving style.

However, recently Carlos Sainz ruled out any such aid provided by the Scuderia. Carlos had previously mentioned the early part of the season as a low point in his career. Sainz blatantly spoke about the lack of favoritism in an F1 car’s development. He stated, “This is what I am going to say, and say very openly: An F1 car doesn’t develop towards one driver or the other.”

The 28-year-old did not shy away from declaring his own efforts toward blending in with the way of driving demanded by the car. Carlos continued, “We started with a car that required a certain, specific driving style, and even in the worst moments, I adapted.” Additionally, Carlos Sainz admitted his adjustments to have come later than the ideal timeline. The Spanish driver said, “I managed a bit too late for my liking, but I adapted to make it happen.”

“Start better and adapt,” Carlos Sainz sets his goal for 2023

Carlos has rejected any indications about Ferrari helping the Spanish driver to match Charles Leclerc

Sainz elaborated on the behind-the-scenes work that goes into improving an F1 car. Carlos Sainz stated, “An F1 car develops to be quicker and develops on the weaknesses it has.” The 28-year-old firmly expressed his role in the car’s development at Scuderia Ferrari. He continued, “my job as a driver is to give indications of where the car is weak. It is contrasted with data, and I give that feedback.”

Subsequently, Carlos Sainz shed some light on the only requirement he expects from the car and the team. Sainz said, “Honestly, the only thing I care about is that the car is faster, and I went through some difficult moments last year.” Lastly, Carlos concluded his statement by expressing his target for 2023. He commented, “The target this year is again to start better and adapt to whatever the car [is like].” The Spanish driver will aim to beat Charles Leclerc at Maranello this season.

Thus, Carlos Sainz has voiced his opinion regarding the in-season development at Scuderia Ferrari. Certainly, Sainz improved in the latter half of the 2022 season and even won the British Grand Prix on his own accord. Hence, the 28-year-old had come to grips with the required driving style of the F1-75. However, it remains to be seen if Carlos can adapt to the SF-23 from the get-go this year.
