Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz displayed spectacular pace on race day at the Austrian GP. Despite being hindered by a botched pitstop and team orders from securing the podium, the Spaniard still managed to secure P4. Or so he thought. Aston Martin protested the race results on account of unreported track limit violations. The protest was upheld, resulting in Sainz being slapped with a 10-second penalty 5 hours after the race concluded.
This penalty significantly altered the top 10, excluding the podium trio. Carlos Sainz dropped down to P6 in the standings from his finish of P4. It is safe to say the driver did not take the news well, as he made his thoughts clear when he commented on the Instagram post from F1 issuing the final race result.
The Ferrari driver left a brief comment saying, “Nicely done,” accompanied by a sarcastic applause emoji. He doesn’t agree with the stewards’ decision. It just adds insult to injury after the Spaniard was already hindered by his team by being forced to follow team orders. Despite all the adversities that he overcame, this blow was one he didn’t expect.

Carlos Sainz showcased an impressive performance in the Australian Grand Prix, only to face disappointment as his race concluded with a five-second penalty. The penalty was imposed due to a minor error he made during the final restart, resulting in contact with Fernando Alonso and subsequent chaos on the track. Although the incident did not affect Alonso’s outcome, Sainz was penalized, causing him to drop out of the points-scoring positions.
Carlos Sainz expressed his fury and described the penalty as a disgrace after the race. He said his desire to speak with the stewards before providing further comments. Sainz’s immediate reaction showcased his frustration and disappointment with the penalty decision, indicating his intention to seek clarification and express his thoughts directly to the stewards involved.
He said, “I am not going to comment on this until I have spoken to stewards and they reverse the decision. It is the biggest disgrace I have seen in years in this sport. I can’t say anything because I’m going to regret that. I want to speak to the stewards first.”
Ferrari protested the decision and lodged an appeal, which was not upheld. Thus Sainz fell outside the points in the Australian GP. The Austrian GP marks the second instance where the Spaniard believes he has been unfairly penalized, as seen by his sarcastic reaction. However, it is much more subtle than his fury at his penalty in Melbourne.
