Carlos Sainz receives the ‘Best Male Athlete’ award from the Community of Madrid
Carlos Sainz
Recently, Carlos Sainz was recently awarded ‘Best Male Athlete’ at the ‘Seven Stars of Sport’ Award of the Community of Madrid. He was given the award for 2019, while Marcelo, who recently left Real Madrid, was awarded the same for the year 2020. Among other awardees were Paralympic athlete, Sara Martínez (2019), and rugby player Patricia García (2020).
The award was presented by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Taking to Twitter, Sainz wrote expressing his gratitude: “It is an honor to have received the Seven Stars of Sport Award today as the best male athlete. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the Community of Madrid for this special recognition.”
Sainz is a true Madrilenian. He was born there and supports perhaps the most iconic football club ever – Real Madrid. The flag of his city, the ‘Community of Madrid’ features seven stars, which perhaps serves as the inspiration of the name of the award. 2019 was certainly a great year for him, as he finished sixth, ahead of Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon. But 2022 has been different.
Recapping Carlos Sainz’s 2022 season
Carlos Sainz was presented with new challenges in 2022, and new achievements as well. His first pole position – his first win, and then his second pole position. For the first time in his career, he had a car capable of fighting for victory consistently, which was a very unfamiliar situation. Unfortunately, the year has not worked out as he would have hoped.
Sainz is currently 5th in the standings, 5 points behind George Russell, and 50 points behind his teammate, Charles Leclerc, who hasn’t had an ideal year either. The championship has run away from Ferrari – and it is not the drivers who are primarily responsible for that, even if they have played a part.
Ferrari have suffered eight retirements this season, of which perhaps only 2 are the fault of the drivers, and it has cost them dearly in the battle with Red Bull. This will definitely need to improve in 2023 if they are to challenge for the title again, and it will also be crucial for them to not make the mistakes they have this year.
It’s not just the retirements, of course, but even in the races in which the drivers didn’t DNF, they were often compromised by the team. And so, as Leclerc and Sainz agree, the goal for the rest of the year is to learn how to perfect the ‘execution’ of the weekends.
