The absolute dominance of Red Bull Max Verstappen has marked the 2023 season. Not everyone is a fan of the dominance, though, and the fan’s frustration was visible during Verstappen’s US GP win celebration on Sunday. A session of the fans booed him. The negative reaction from fans was not only because of the dominance but also the supposed bias Red Bull has towards him, with his teammate Sergio Perez often being overlooked.
The team’s chief advisor Helmut Marko’s insensitive comment about Perez has also provoked the fans, especially South American supporters. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expects this dis-taste from fans to be visible at the coming weekend in the Mexican GP, the home race of Sergio Perez. After the US GP, he admitted that Red Bull and Max Verstappen would get an uncomfortable reception from the passionate Mexican fan.
I’m not worried about that. We love running in Mexico; we love Mexican fans, and the passion of that track is unique…I don’t think Max will have the warmest reception in Mexico…One year you are the villain, and the next, the hero.
Hormner said, as reported by Soymotor.
The controversies that led some fans to dislike Red Bull
The fans were agitated over Red Bull due to Helmut Marko’s insensitive comment on Perez’s nationality. Despite apologizing to Perez and the fans, Marko continually faces backlash due to his comments. The Red Bulls are still unsure how the fans might react to seeing them.
Even Max Verstappen is partly to blame for the ill-reaction towards the team. During last year’s Brazilian GP, Verstappen declined to follow the team’s orders. This later led to Perez losing precious points and ending up third in the constructor’s championship. This enabled the fans to get more reasons to hold a grudge against the team on their home soil.
Despite the possibility of ill-reception at the Mexico City GP, The Mexican has termed the Mexico City GP as one of his favorite destinations to race in. Perez also exclaimed that he would perform better and achieve better at home.
