Christian Horner can do without an exciting title race: “I’d prefer not to have to go through that again”

2022 had promised an exciting title race and the end of the domination by Mercedes. The second certainly happened, as Mercedes lie in third place now, but the exciting title race part went away a little bit, after having shown much promise in the first part of the season. From Bahrain to Miami, with the exception of Australia, Red Bull and Ferrari looked very close.
But starting with Spain, Ferrari began falling away from Red Bull. This was not due to any lack of pace, it was reliability and the fact that Ferrari just could not seem to keep their act together. From Imola to Canada, Ferrari won 0 races, despite looking like the better car for most of those races, especially so in Spain and Monaco.
This means that Red Bull are now 97 points ahead of Ferrari, and sit comfortably in the first place, while Ferrari may actually have to contend with Mercedes for the P2 in the championship, seeing as the Silver Arrows are only 30 points behind. The championship looked to be a battle between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, but Ferrari’s missteps, coupled with Leclerc’s own mistakes have meant that Verstappen looks unassailable on top of the standings. Christian Horner is happy with the current situation.
Horner: ‘Not one ounce of me’ wishes for a more exciting title race
In an interview by Motorsport Week, when Christian Horner was asked if he would like to see a more exciting title race between Red Bull and Ferrari, he, quite understandably, said that he does not hope for anything of the sort: “There’s not one ounce of me that wishes that.”
He pointed out last year’s championship when things had gone down to the wire between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton: “Last year was a heavyweight bout that went 22 rounds. And I’d prefer not to have to go through that again.”
Despite their seemingly unassailable lead, Horner reiterated that Red Bull will not become complacent: “The points tables look healthy, and it’s a great way to sign off into the summer break. But there is still a lot of racing to go.”
“Ferrari are quick, Mercedes are coming back into the game. There’s still a long, long way to go in this championship, plus a sprint race.”
He added that there is still a long way to go in the championship: “So we don’t take anything for granted. There’s still a lot of racing to do and they’re at very different venues.”
Indeed, world championships can change quickly, and from things not in your control, as Charle Leclerc can attest to. While there is still quite a way to go, Red Bull and Max Verstappen look comfortable to end the year on top of the standings, and them not winning the championship from here is an extremely unlikely situation.
