1996 Formula 1 World Champion, Damon Hill, has lauded the efforts of Lawrence Stroll, the owner of the Aston Martin F1 project. Hill said that Stroll had “proved everyone wrong” with his immense investment in the Silverstone-based team, which began paying off with a third-place finish at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, courtesy of Fernando Alonso.
Stroll has put in significant investment into the team since purchasing it midway through the 2018 campaign. In 2021, the team transitioned from Racing Point to Aston Martin, which has proved to be a wise decision. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, the team had a strong claim of being the second-fastest team on the track, a fact that has surprised many, including Hill.
“I think that might be a stretch too far,” Hill told Sky Sports News about the team’s title challenge. “They’ve exceeded everyone’s expectations, they’ve exceeded mine, and they’ve probably exceeded their own, so they’re very, very delighted at the moment. Lawrence has put his money where his mouth is, and he’s put together this team. I think everyone thought, ‘come on, Lawrence, you know you’re going lose a lot of money here, you’re getting a little bit ahead of yourself.’ But he proved everyone wrong,”,
Lawrence Stroll had proved everybody wrong
Damon Hill has praised the Canadian Billionaire for his vision and for proving naysayers wrong, indicating that many people told him he would lose money. “He’s put together this team, has put together the car. They’ve got Dan Fallows, who is ex-Red Bull, and he knows a thing or two about what Red Bull is up to. So there’s a little bit of insight, but they certainly won’t be getting any help from Red Bull from now on.”
Alonso’s podium finish was a bright spot for the team as it overshadowed the performances of the Mercedes team, who were beaten by a customer car. Red Bull dominated the race, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez leading the way. Hill believes that Red Bull’s dominance in the race could indicate a tough season ahead for the other teams.
“It was a case of them [Red Bull] just cleaning up, and they disappeared into the distance. You couldn’t really forgive them for not knowing who was in the lead because poor old Max was out there doing his business, half a minute up the road. The rest of them were tripping over the rails with the exception, of course of Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, which really, for me, was the winner of the race. He put on a fantastic show and a fantastic dice with Lewis Hamilton. So there was action there and got the crowd on their feet,” Hill said.
