Daniel Ricciardo has had an interesting year so far. After parting ways with McLaren at the end of the 2022 F1 season, it seemed like the “Honey Badger’s” F1 career was in shambles. Hopes rose when he got back with Red Bull Racing as their third driver for 2023. However, no one expected what was going to happen next. While Daniel intended to land an F1 season as soon as possible, the call for his return came rather quickly.
10 races into 2023, rookie Nyck De Vries’s performance at AlphaTauri didn’t seem satisfactory at all to Dr Helmut Marko and the bigwigs at Red Bull. This further led to the termination of the Dutchman’s contract, leaving an empty seat at AlphaTauri. With two races to go for F1’s summer break, Daniel Ricciardo got the gig. Ever since then, it seems like the Aussie has finally found his mojo again.
Ahead of the 2023 Dutch GP, Daniel shared his thoughts for the second half of the season in an interview. “I’m very excited about racing at Zandvoort, mainly to get the second half of the season going,” Ricciardo said. “I only got to do the two races before the break, so even if I enjoyed a bit of time off, I spent most of the past few weeks training and enjoying the chance to keep building up my fitness, to be all set to attack the second half of the season,” he continued.
Daniel Ricciardo has signed with AlphaTauri to race for the rest of the season
A few weeks ago, Daniel was supposed to drive the RB-19 during a Pirelli tyre test at Silverstone after the GP. The Aussie went on to do the same and put in some impressive lap times. His fastest time was good enough to put him on the front row alongside Max Verstappen for the British GP. This in turn led to the Red Bull squad to give him a shot with AlphaTauri, and he went on to replace Nyck De Vries after just 10 races.
Based on his performances in the remainder of the season, it could be the deciding factor in Daniel Ricciardo keeping his seat in 2024. On the other hand, many in the paddock have been longing to see Max and Daniel reunite as teammates at Red Bull. If Sergio Perez doesn’t perform to the level expected from him, it could quite possibly mean that Daniel gets a shot at the coveted Red Bull seat. It will be interesting to see what happens in the remainder of the season.
