Fernando Alonso, the Aston Martin F1 driver, has been in the sport for over two decades. He had a sensational 2023 campaign and with a seat opening up at Mercedes for 2025, former Red Bull F1 driver, David Coulthard has urged the Brackley-based team to put their money on Alonso.

Lewis Hamilton dropped the bomb of the century recently when he decided to join Ferrari from 2025 onward. While the dust around this has begun to settle, people have been unable to hold their horses and have been throwing various names into the hat regarding next year’s Mercedes drive.

Fernando Alonso is being seen as a suitable candidate and while talking about the same on the Formula for Success podcast, David Coulthard said, as reported by Marca:

If I were Mercedes, I would choose Alonso over Vettel. Fernando is fit for racing, he understands the engine and the power unit by having it also in Aston Martin, he is still a gladiator and has the knife between his teeth.

The 52-year-old has made it quite clear that in his opinion, the ideal replacement for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes is the former two-time world champion, Alonso. Coulthard firmly believes that the Spaniard is still hungry as ever to do well in the sport.

Fernando Alonso would want to keep his options open for next year

While David Coulthard has left no stone unturned in deeming Fernando Alonso as the best 2025 choice for Mercedes, the latter is not going to simply jump at the opportunity, even if Toto Wolff and Co. come up with an offer. How the upcoming 2024 F1 season pans out for him at Aston Martin will dictate his next year’s decision.

The Silverstone-based team had a prolific run during the 2023 campaign courtesy of the AMR23. It was because of the potent machinery that the 42-year-old had the chance to score several podiums and ultimately finish the campaign in fourth place.

Mercedes has so far struggled under the current regulations when it comes to producing a championship-worthy car. If Aston Martin manages to produce a solid car this year as well, then there could arise a situation where Alonso might be tempted into extending his deal with them. However, if Mercedes does come up with an offer for 2025, it certainly would be a tough for Alonso to let it pass by.
