Former racing star explains why Red Bull “are still the most dangerous team” despite cost cap penalty
Mark Webber, a former Red Bull driver warns the others that a penalty will not stop RBR to bag another title.
In 2021, Red Bull breached their budget cap and the announcement was made by the FIA in 2022. In both seasons they won the championship with Max Verstappen. RBR was issued a penalty for exceeding the cost cap. Their wind tunnel time was reduced by 10 percent which will affect their aerodynamics testing. They also had to pay a fine of $7 Million.
Mark Webber, an Australian retired Formula 1 racer feels that this penalty will not make much difference on RB19. He is under the impression that Max Verstappen, the two times world champion will bag his third. Last season, Verstappen won 15 consecutive races and made a new record. The team finished 1st in the drivers championship and the constructors.
Webber told Autosports that Red Bull is still the most dangerous team. Red Bull are still the most dangerous team coming out of the blocks. I don’t think anyone knows really how much that’s going to impact them, but I’m sure they’ve got enough creative people there to keep it going.
“Actually, everyone has to lift their games in all aspects. We saw that Mercedes had great reliability, Ferrari of course less so. But Red Bull had good reliability and were strong at all tracks.”And Max, it’s just ‘Formula 1 plus’ for him at times. I think the highlight for me was to see what he did through the field in Spa. That was just unbelievable,” praised the Australian who had raced for Red Bull before.

Webber also feels that Mercedes might deliver a surprise package. The team would have allocated the time, and money within the budget cap, and improved a lot in regard to the R&D aspects. He believes it is going to be an interesting first half due to the surprise elements the teams will bring. There are a lot of changes this season apart from the rules and regulations, and the mix-up in drivers and team principals.
RB19, Red Bull’s new car will be unveiled in New York on 3rd February. Haas will be the first team to launch their car on 31st Jan and Alpine, the last team to launch on 16th February. Soon after that the teams will begin their pre-season testing and buckle up for the new season in March. The Formula 1 world anxiously awaits this season.
